Evaluation and Outcomes of Midodrine, Octreotide, and Albumin in Patients with Hepatorenal Syndrome

Hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) is a frequent complication of advanced cirrhosis. Terlipressin recently gained FDA approval in United States for the treatment of HRS. Due to its newer availability, lack of experience, complexity of use, and pharmacoeconomic considerations, it is not frequently utilized. Instead, many institutions continue to use the historical standard of care which includes midodrine, octreotide, and albumin (MOA). However, many providers use albumin alone, likely due to historical practices and product familiarity. The objective of our study was to determine outcomes on renal function, hospital length of stay, and mortality in patients who received MOA therapy compared to albumin alone.
